Your body was made to heal.

Most of the diseases that fill a doctor's schedule today are caused, in large part, by how we live. That is good news. It means they can often be improved, and sometimes reversed, by changing how we live. I help people do that.

“Beloved, I wish above all things that thou mayest prosper and be in health, even as thy soul prospereth.”

3 John 1:2

The first visit

We start with the whole picture.

Our first appointment is an hour. I will ask about your history, your medications, what you eat, how you sleep, how you move, and what is going on in your life. Most people have never been asked these questions by a doctor. The answers usually point to where the trouble started.

From there, the plan is to treat the cause behind the numbers on the lab report.

About

A little about me.

I am a physician, board certified in lifestyle medicine, with a master's in public health from Loma Linda University. I have spent nearly forty years studying how the way we live affects our health. I live outside Futaleufú, a small town in Chilean Patagonia, where I see patients by video, run, and take photographs of the mountains.

I have also been a patient. I have an autoimmune disease, I have had breast cancer, and I went through menopause like everyone else. Changing how I ate and lived made a real difference for me. I know what the work looks like from both sides of the desk.

The process

What happens next.

Book a consultation

We meet by video for an hour and go through your health, your history, and what you want to change.

Get a plan

You leave with a written plan: what to eat, how to move, how to sleep, and which labs to repeat and when.

Follow up

We check in regularly. We look at what is working, adjust what is not, and coordinate with your other doctors as needed.

Who this is for

Conditions that respond to how you live.

If you have one of these, there is a good chance lifestyle change can help. Here is a little of what the research says about each.

  • An autoimmune disease. Rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, inflammatory bowel disease, and others. Diet and lifestyle can lower inflammation and, often, the dose of medication you need. Learn more →
  • Depression, anxiety, or brain fog. What you eat, how you sleep, and how you move change how you think and feel. If you take psychiatric medication, we work with your prescriber, never around them. Learn more →
  • Type 2 diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, high cholesterol. In one large British trial, nearly half of the people with type 2 diabetes who followed a structured diet program were in remission a year later, off all diabetes medication (Lean, Lancet 2018). Learn more →
  • Perimenopause and menopause. Hot flashes, sleep, mood, and weight all respond to diet and exercise. The long-term risks of this stage, heart disease and bone loss, are the ones lifestyle medicine is best at preventing. Learn more →

The method

Ten things that heal.

None of these is new. Each one has a body of research behind it, and together they cover most of what the body needs to repair itself. Click any one to see what the science shows.

What to expect

Most people feel better sooner than they expect.

In the Lifestyle Heart Trial, 82% of the patients who changed their diet, exercise, and stress habits saw their coronary arteries begin to open within a year, without cholesterol drugs (Ornish, Lancet 1990). Results like that take real work, and the work pays off.

The body responds to being treated well, usually sooner than people expect, and I will be checking in with you the whole way.
